One of my childhood influences that is unworldly enough to have inspired Run Detective was Invaders from Mars - I suspect this 1953 movie was playing on the TV one Sunday afternoon while I played at my grandparents. I don't remember much of it but it was the first time I saw an alien on TV and with people sinking into sand I was freaked out a little.
